Ease the pain gently
Take painkillers you'd normally use, and rinse with warm salty water. Avoid very hot, cold or sugary food on that side. Don't hold an aspirin against the gum, it can burn the tissue.
Act fast, and keep it moist
Hold an adult tooth by the crown, not the root, and if you can, gently place it back in the socket. If not, keep it in milk and call us straight away. Speed makes all the difference.
Apply steady pressure
Bite down on a clean, folded piece of gauze or a cloth for around ten minutes. If heavy bleeding continues, call us or NHS 111, and if it's severe or won't settle, head to A&E.
Don't wait it out
Facial swelling can mean infection, so call us promptly, or NHS 111 if we're closed. If swelling spreads towards your eye or throat, or affects your breathing or swallowing, treat it as an emergency and call 999 or go to A&E.
