Root canal treatment is needed when infection or damage reaches the nerve inside a tooth. These are the signs worth getting checked, the sooner the better.
Persistent toothache: A deep, lingering ache or sharp pain when biting can mean the nerve inside the tooth is affected.

We make a tiny opening in the top of the tooth and gently remove the infected tissue from inside. This is the part that eases the pain you've been feeling.
Cleaning and shaping
We carefully clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, shaping the tiny canals so they're ready to be sealed. We take our time to do it thoroughly and well.
Sealing and protecting
We fill and seal the tooth to keep infection out, then often place a crown to protect and strengthen it. Your tooth is saved, and the pain is gone for good.

Wait while you're numb
The anaesthetic takes an hour or two to wear off. Hold off eating until it has, so you don't bite your cheek or tongue, and take it easy for the rest of the day.
Mild tenderness is normal
The tooth may feel a little tender for a few days, especially when biting. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually all that's needed, and it settles quickly.
Be gentle on that tooth
Try to chew on the other side until any tenderness eases, and especially until a permanent crown is fitted, as the tooth can be a little more fragile in the meantime.
