Common reasons to see an emergency dentist

If you're dealing with any of these, please don't wait. Give us a ring and we'll talk you through what to do and arrange to see you as soon as possible.

Severe toothache: Pain that's keeping you up at night, or won't ease with painkillers, needs looking at quickly.

A knocked-out tooth: Time really matters here. Call us straight away, a tooth can sometimes be saved if you act fast.

A broken or chipped tooth: Whether it's painful or just sharp, we can ease the discomfort and protect the tooth.

Swelling or an abscess: Facial swelling or a painful lump on the gum can signal infection that needs prompt treatment.

Lost filling or crown: A filling or crown that's come out can leave a tooth sensitive and vulnerable, so it's best sorted quickly.

Emergency first-aid advice from North Harrow Dental
If you have
Badtoothache

Ease the pain gently

Take painkillers you'd normally use, and rinse with warm salty water. Avoid very hot, cold or sugary food on that side. Don't hold an aspirin against the gum, it can burn the tissue.

If it's a
Knocked-outtooth

Act fast, and keep it moist

Hold an adult tooth by the crown, not the root, and if you can, gently place it back in the socket. If not, keep it in milk and call us straight away. Speed makes all the difference.

If there's
Bleedingthat won't stop

Apply steady pressure

Bite down on a clean, folded piece of gauze or a cloth for around ten minutes. If heavy bleeding continues, call us or NHS 111, and if it's severe or won't settle, head to A&E.

If you have
Swellingon the face

Don't wait it out

Facial swelling can mean infection, so call us promptly, or NHS 111 if we're closed. If swelling spreads towards your eye or throat, or affects your breathing or swallowing, treat it as an emergency and call 999 or go to A&E.

When something goes wrong, the first thing to do is call.
